On August 31st, the advance study meeting was held in Hirakata Campus for the students who are planning to do volunteer activities for the purpose of supporting the recovery of the areas stricken by Northeast Japan earthquake and tsunami.  Lecturers who have pastexperienced in supporting activities in the stricken areas were invited and made lectures as follows:

Ms. Chie Kojima (clinical psychologist)
Topic: "Psychological study - How to nestle up to people dejected with sorrow"
Mr. Hiroki Matsumoto (staff of the Steering Committee of Hirakata Citizens' Activity Support Center)
Topic: "On-the-spot reports and the meaning of volunteer work in the stricken areas"

"My impression" by Yu Ohtani (Junior student of the faculty of Economic Finance of the school of Business)
Just after the earthquake, my colleague and I in the same seminar class started making a plan to go to the stricken areas to support the people there, under the direction of Prof. Yasuyo Takahashi, and after all we had the advance study meeting held.

Having listened to the lectures based on the actual supporting activities in the stricken areas, I have found that the people there and I have the same feelings.  These are: love for our hometowns, close bonds between parents and children, and among friends, and concern for the future.  Therefore we should not be indifferent to others' suffering and fate, and it is important for us to feel others' tears as our own.

I was shocked at the pictures taken in the stricken areas.  I am afraid that many people are still shedding tears in secret remembering their missing families.  As a result, the feeling welled up that we should not escape from the hardships and should think about what we can do and do supporting activities to open up the future

I think the future of the stricken areas is our future.  Therefore we should keep on going ahead carving out these hardships, otherwise much bigger problems will attack not only the stricken areas but also rest of Japan in future.  We should share our wisdom and power in cooperation making use of the learning at the university, and we will carry out the activities through complete self control in order to support the recovery even if our power is small.
