On Tuesday May 10th, "Special Lecture based on on-the-spot report of stricken areas of East Japan Earthquake" was held by Masao Horie, our guest professor and an announcer at ABC Asahi Broadcasting Corporation was held under the sponsorship of the Department of Law and Policy in Faculty of Contemporary Society.
Mr. Horie showed us videos that he took there and explained about "Tsunami Tendenko", "Encouragement by a girl" and "The areas where the recoveries are delayed". He told the students and audience who came from the neighborhood that it is important for us not to act meaninglessly under the information received from the mass media but to act after analyzing and judging the information received.

【Tsunami Tendenko】
This phrase was born in the history of Sanriku Distrist which has been attacked by tsunami over and over again. It means, "When tsunami comes we should run away one by one quickly to higher places." In Kamaishi City, they are trying to intensify disaster drills, and one of the drills is "Tsunami Tendenko". The number of primary school students and junior high school students in Kamaishi City is about 2,900 in total and almost all the students have been found safe.

【Encouragement from a girl】
A girl who took refuge in the gym had her father killed by a tsunami. Her father was a priest in the church and he didn't run away in order to help people left in the church. However she didn't cry and handed with smile a letter to people in the gym, in which she wrote, "You should show your smile when you are in trouble, so cheer up!" They read her letter full of kindness with tears, and recovered their own smiles and a positive attitude. The encouragement from this girl has changed tears of sorrow into tears of joy in the gym.

【The areas where the recoveries are delayed】
Towns such as Kesennuma City are engaged in the processing of marine products, so a real recovery can be made with not only fishing but also marketing, processing and keeping products refrigerated. Moreover, we need three kinds of vision: "short-term" "medium-term" and "long-term", so the government should show their plans.

The lecture made by Mr. Horie impressed us a lot on the points that it is very important for us to train ourselves in disaster drills and establish local communications in our daily lives.
